Understanding decimals and Place Value

Contents

What is Place value?

Values that are less than 1 are shown in the decimal system. These values are shown after a decimal point. When you are reading decimals, first read the whole number, then the point as “and”. The numbers to the left of the decimals are the ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, etc.

Example:

1.7 = one and seven-tenths

0.008 = eight thousandths

11.71 = eleven and seventy-one hundreds
