Equivalent fractions are of equal value though they have different numerator and denominator.

eg.

These fractions represent the same proportion of the whole. Therefore, ^{1}/_{2} = ^{2}/_{4} =^{3}/_{6}= ^{4}/_{8}

The above fractions are equivalent fractions. If we simplify fractions we also get equivalent fractions.

Exercise 4: Clara got 20 sweets, one-half of the pack of sweets. How many sweets were in the pack? How much does Zina and Sue get if they are to share the balance equally?

Answer: The pack contains 40 sweets. The girl will get 10 sweets each.
