The four basic operations of arithmetic are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Basic Addition and Subtraction
Addition
The plus symbol is used when we are adding. Addition of two numbers is the total amount of those values combined.
Example: 2 and 2 is equal to 4. The mathematical expression is 2 + 2 = 4
Practice is important when counting. You get better when you practice.
Subtraction
The minus symbol is used when we are subtracting. We take one number away from another to find out what is left.

Example: 5 minus 2 is equal to 3. The mathematical expression is 5 – 2 = 3
Subtraction is the opposite of addition.
