Four basic operations of arithmetic are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

## Basic Addition and Subtraction

### Addition

The plus symbol is used when we are adding. Addition of two numbers is the total amount of those values combined.

*Example*: 2 and 2 is equal to 4. The mathematical expression is 2 + 2 = 4

Practice is important when counting. You get better when you practice.

### Subtraction

The minus symbol is used when we are subtracting. We take one number away from another to find out what is left.

*Example*: 5 minus 2 is equal to 3. The mathematical expression is 5 – 2 = 3
