Fractions can be used to solve problems. Let’s look at some examples before you start.
Chung had a chocolate bar with 12 blocks. He ate two blocks of the chocolate and gave his sister three blocks of it. What fraction of the chocolate was eaten?
Answer: Amount of chocolate bars eaten were 2 + 3 = 5; Fraction of chocolate eaten = 5/12.
Andre has many marbles. He gave his best friend Fred 2/5 of his marbles and 1/5 to his brother. He remained with 30 marbles. How many marbles did he have before he shared the marbles?
Answer: First, find the total amount of marbles he gave away = 2/5 +1/5= 3/5;
Andre remained with 5/5 – 3/5 = 2/5 ; that is 2/5 = 30 marbles.
Observe the number line below.
Andre had 75 marbles before he shared them.
Three-tenths of fruits in a basket are red apples and 1/10 are green apples. What fraction of fruits are either red or green apples. Give your answer in the lowest terms.
3/10 + 1/10 = 4/10
