Fractions can be used to solve problems. Let’s look at some examples before you start.

### Example 1:

Chung had a chocolate bar with 12 blocks. He ate two blocks of the chocolate and gave his sister three blocks of it. What fraction of the chocolate was eaten?

Answer: Amount of chocolate bars eaten were 2 + 3 = 5; Fraction of chocolate eaten = ^{5}/_{12}.

### Example 2:

Andre has many marbles. He gave his best friend Fred ^{2}/_{5} of his marbles and ^{1}/_{5} to his brother. He remained with 30 marbles. How many marbles did he have before he shared the marbles?

**Answer**: First, find the total amount of marbles he gave away = ^{2}/_{5} +^{1}/_{5}= ^{3}/_{5};

Andre remained with ^{5}/_{5} – ^{3}/_{5} = ^{2}/_{5} ; that is ^{2}/_{5} = 30 marbles.

Observe the number line below.

Andre had 75 marbles before he shared them.

### Example 3:

Three-tenths of fruits in a basket are red apples and 1/10 are green apples. What fraction of fruits are either red or green apples. Give your answer in the lowest terms.

**Answer**:

^{3}/_{10} + ^{1}/_{10} = ^{4}/_{10}

lowest term = ^{2}/_{5}
