Statistics in the Real World
Part of mathematics involves organizing information so it can be useful for making decisions. In this exercise, you will do just that.
Activity:
You belong to your school’s cricket team. Your coach wants to collect data on the teams performance. He discovers, your team did not perform well in the last season.
Below is how the data collected was organized. Observe the table carefully.
(Title)Last Season’s Team Performance
Games | Tally | Frequency |
Win | 5 | |
Lose | 10 | |
Draw | ||| | 3 |
Total | 13 |
Your coach does not want this to happen in the next season. He has asked everyone in the team to come up with suggestions on how the team can improve. Of course, you first have to address the problem by identifying the reasons or causes for the team’s poor performance.
Discussion:
- Identify the problems the team has. Most likely you will have to address the problems the players face at home and at school.
- Suggest possible causes of the problems.
This information will help the coach collect more data on the team so it can be useful to help address the problems the players are facing. This is the importance of statistics.
Once data is collected, it is organized. Most times a tally chart is used.
Activity 2:
Use the information here to help you construct your own tally chart showing the following information.
- Players in need of new shoes – 6
- Players in need of pads – 5
- Players in need of helmets – 1
- Players in need of gloves – 7
Now show your chart to someone.
Now, click on the box below to start the exercise.
Geometric Patterns
Geometric Patterns consists of a series of shapes. Much like numbers, shapes can also make patterns. You must identify the rule the pattern follows.
Observe the pattern below. Can you tell what shape is next?
Patterns could also show a change in the shape as well. View the following videos below.
Now, time to practice.

Camel. Pray, sir, where are you going?
Man. I am going to the Wise Man to seek my fortune.
Camel. Seek mine, too. I have had these sacks of gold on my back for a long time. I cannot lie down. Seek mine, too.
Man. I will.
Tiger. Pray, sir, where are you going?
Man. I am going to the Wise Man to seek my fortune.
Tiger. Seek mine, too. For a long time I have had this thorn in my foot. I cannot rest. Seek mine, too.
Man. I will. [Man comes to Wise Man.]
Wise Man. I pray you, sir, why are you here?
Man. I seek my fortune. I am a very poor man.
Wise Man. Then, I fear you have been living only for yourself. Think of making others rich and you will become rich.
Man. In the jungle I met a camel. He carried two sacks of gold on his back. They were so heavy that he could not lie down. He asked me to seek his fortune, too.
Wise Man. Take the sacks off his back. Then he will be free, and you will have the gold. Why did you not do it before?
Man. I was thinking only of myself. After that I met a tiger. For many days he has had a thorn in his foot. He cannot rest. He asked me to seek his fortune, too.
Wise Man. Take the thorn out of his foot, and both of you will gain by it. Why did you not think of this before?
Man. I was thinking only of myself. [Man goes homeward. He meets the tiger.]
Tiger. Have you found my fortune?
Man. The Wise Man told me to take the thorn out of your foot.[Pulls thorn out and starts to go on.]
Tiger. Thank you. Here, take my treasure. I did not think of giving it to you before. [Man goes on.]
Camel. Have you found my fortune?
Man. The Wise Man told me to take the sacks off your back.[Man takes off sacks.]
Camel. Thank you. But stop! These sacks are full of gold. Take them, and both of us will be happy. Why did we not think of this before?

Mathematics: Problem Solving 1
Example: Examples below are the regrouping of the time.
Question 1: Find the total of 4 hrs 20 min. and 3 hrs and 45 min.
Start adding from the right. Notice you have gotten a total of 65 min. in the minutes side. Remembering that 60 minutes is equal to 1 hour. You then minus the 60 minutes from the amount of minutes. The 60 minutes is the hour you will add to the hours side. See the workings below. The Answer is 8 hours and 5 minutes. This is your regrouping of the minutes and hours.
Question 2: Calculate the difference between 3 hr. 25 min. and 1 hr. 45 min.
Now, time for some questions.
Read each question carefully before answering.
